Teen shot dead in front of mom at Chicago South Side laundromat - Gunman makes a clean get-a-way

A teenage boy was shot dead in front of his mother Friday in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side.

Jalen Stogner, 17, and his mother were at a laundromat in the 4800 block of South Ashland Avenue when Stogner got into a verbal fight with a man about 4:20 p.m., officials said.

White Man Says He Was Beaten Savagely by Group of Blacks for Dating African-American

A Georgia man was reportedly beaten savagely and “left for dead” by a group of black men who apparently didn’t approve that he was dating an African-American girl.
As the interracial couple roamed through Ellis Square, one of Savannah’s busiest centers in the historic downtown district, a group of three black men began taunting them, hurling racial slurs and gestures at them. The incident occurred shortly before midnight last Friday, WTOC-TV reports.
Soon after, the men began blowing kisses at the pair and then suddenly jumped the white boyfriend, Andrew Quade, 23, without warning. They proceeded to beat him viciously, leaving him barely holding onto consciousness.
“This shouldn’t happen in this day and age. I know we’re in the South and all that, but it’s time for a change,” the girlfriend, Olufisayo Bakre, told WTOC-TV.
The couple says they did not provoke the men prior to the attack. They were just minding their own business, trying to enjoy the evening. The couple is confident that the different colors of their skin prompted the assault.
“One of them was making racial comments at us and one of them was blowing kisses. It was very aggravating,” Bakre recounted.
Quade said he did his best to stay calm and ignore them when the men began heckling him and his girlfriend.
“I didn’t want to freak out on them because I thought they were saying something about me and my girlfriend. I wanted to get more information and understand the situation. But before I could, I was knocked out,” he told WTOC-TV.

"We're only treading water" may have been right after all - Emanuel, McCarthy waive the white flag ask feds for help with black violence in Chicago

Just last week Mayor Emanuel ran in front of the TV cameras to allegedly correct his police Supt. Garry McCarthy. Supt. Garry McCarthy told reporters that the Chicago police department was failing in slowing down black violence in Chicago. Saying the Chicago police department was only treading water in black violence. Mayor Rahm Emanuel was so angry with McCarthy for such a statement that he wouldn't even allow McCarthy to do the bullshit "correction". Mayor Rahm Emanuel must have finally concluded that the black violence in Chicago is OUT OF CONTROL, mainly on other blacks but also on white Chicago citizens and tourists in the downtown areas. Rahm had no other choice to call in the Federal Army of Law Enforcement especially since Chicago is 2,000 cops short.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has asked federal law enforcement for help in combating violence and drugs in two areas of Chicago that the city says have seen the highest increase in crime this year.

Chicago police officers will coordinate with U.S. marshals and FBI, DEA and ATF agents to go after what the mayor called “high-crime areas and high-target individuals” in the Grand Crossing and Ogden police districts on the South Side.

The plan is modeled after a crackdown approach that involves saturating so-called conflict zones with gang, narcotics and patrol officers in the Englewood District on the South Side and the Harrison District on the West Side.

98-year-old message in bottle at sea sets world record

It was scooped up from the sea after 98 years, and now officials say a message in a bottle discovered in Scotland has set a world record.
Fisherman Andrew Leaper found the bottle-- released in 1914 -- in his nets in April while sailing east of the Shetland Islands, which lie off Scotland's northern coast.
Guinness World Records confirmed Thursday the find is the oldest message in a bottle ever recovered, beating a previous record by five years.
It was released in a batch of 1,890 bottles in a government experiment to map the undercurrents of the seas around Scotland.
Inside each bottle, a postcard asks the finder to record details of the discovery and promises a reward of a sixpence. Unfortunately for Leaper, the coin no longer exists.

Not safe to go grocery shopping anymore - Several dead in shootout in New Jersey shopping plaza-report

NEW Jersey (Reuters) - An early-morning shooting at a Pathmark supermarket in New Jersey has left at least three people dead, including the suspected gunman, local media said on Friday.

Shots were heard inside the supermarket in Old Bridge, about 35 miles from New York City, just before 4 a.m. EDT as employees were preparing to open the store for business, said the local ABC television affiliate.

Police found two windows bashed in, the station reported.

Old Bridge Mayor Owen Henry described the suspected shooter as a disgruntled worker, the Star-Ledger newspaper said.

"This is the worst phone call a mayor can receive," Henry told the newspaper. "You can prepare for these things but you can't prevent them."

The incident comes just weeks after a series of mass shootings shook the country. In July, a gunman opened fire in a crowded Colorado movie theater, killing 12 people, and earlier this month a white supremacist opened fire in a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, leaving seven people dead.

And last week, a man shot and killed a former co-worker in midtown Manhattan before being killed by police.

He was the surprised guest at the RNC - Clint Eastwood Speech: Movie Star Talks To An Empty Chair (VIDEO)

Mitt Romney probably hoped that surprise guest Clint Eastwood would make his day at the convention -- instead, the 82-year-old gave a rambling speech that was as disastrous as the botched bank robbery that he stopped in "Dirty Harry" while playing a jaded San Francisco cop.

Eastwood talked to an empty chair representing President Barack Obama.

"So Mr. President, how do you handle promises you've made?" he said to the chair. He then proceeded to rankle Obama for his administration's proposal to try Khalid Sheik Mohammed in New York, a plan from which he later backed down, and the war in Afghanistan, for which Romney has endorsed the same withdrawal timeline.

Eastwood also jabbed Vice President Joe Biden, calling him the "intellect of the Democratic party." "He's just a grin with a body behind it," Eastwood said.

He attacked Obama for, of all things, riding in Air Force One. "You could still use a plane," he said, "Not that big gas guzzler you are going around to colleges and talking about student loans and stuff like that."

Eastwood, who praised Romney as a "stellar businessman," later said that he thought it was never a good idea for attorneys to be president, despite the fact that Romney has a J.D. from Harvard Law School.

"When somebody doesn't do the job, you gotta let them go," he said, gesturing to draw a finger across his throat.

A day after an all-too-familiar night of widespread gun violence in the city — including the wounding of a Chicago Police officer — police and community leaders were out at the Back of the Yards’ Sherman Park Thursday, urging kids to avoid the dark lure of gangs and stay focused on school.

Dozens of kids took advantage of the free backpacks, pizza, sport drinks, as well as some on-court tips from the American Basketball Association’s Chicago Steam players and coaches.

“We’re out here today to reclaim the land that evil has taken away from us,” said State Rep. Esther Golar (D-Chicago).

An eruption of gunfire wounded at least 11 people throughout the city Wednesday night through early Thursday. A Chicago Police officer, in plain clothes, was wounded in a shootout with a 15-year-old boy around 8 p.m. Wednesday in the 1300 block of West 112th Place, police said. The incident began when officers stopped three teenage boys for “suspicious activity,” but the 15-year-old fired at the officers and “engaged in a gun battle,” Police Supt. Garry McCarthy told reporters late Wednesday. The injured officer — Nyls Meredith, a 35-year-old veteran who has been with the department for five years — was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Black CNN camerawoman who was racially taunted at Republican National Convention is 'not surprised' it happened - Peanuts were thrown at me like I was a monkey!

The black CNN camerawoman targeted in a racially-charged incident at the Republican National Convention earlier this week has come forward, saying she is “not surprised” it happened.

Patricia Carroll, 34, was pelted with peanuts on the convention floor Tuesday by two alternate GOP delegates who said, “This is what we feed animals.”

Carroll revealed her name to a reporter with the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education after the story made headlines. “I hate that it happened, but I’m not surprised at all,” said Carroll, an Alabama native.

“This is Florida, and I’m from the Deep South,” she said. “You come to places like this, you can count the black people on your hand. They see us doing things they don’t think I should do.”

While Carroll said the racist incident could have happened anywhere, she acknowledged she stood out at the RNC. “There are not that many black women there,” she said. But she told the Maynard Institute that she doesn’t want the incident to be used to score a political point.

“This situation could happen to me at the Democratic convention or standing on the street corner,” she said. Carroll’s comments were published the day after Condoleezza Rice, the first African-American woman to serve as secretary of state, got a long standing ovation after making a powerful statement about overcoming racism in her convention speech.

Growing up in Jim Crow Birmingham, Rice told the delegates that her parents made her "believe that even though she can't have a hamburger at the Woolworth's lunch counter - she can be President of the United State, and she becomes the Secretary of State."

Carroll told the Maynard Institute that what happened to her “should be a wake-up call to black people.”

“People were living in euphoria for a while,” she said. “People think we've gone further than we have."

Shanna Weiner, of La Quinta, Ca., allegedly signed for a U.S. postal package that contained 15 individual packages, each weighing about 18 pounds, according to Lake County Assistant State’s Atty. Lauren Kalcheim Rothenberg.

The Lake County Metropolitan Group performed a search of the home and found the package with a note that stated to “please leave package,” Kalchein Rothenberg said. Inside the house they found Tupperware containing baggies, documents and computer information regarding marijuana, $6,000 in cash and “cannabis found throughout the house,” the prosecutor said.

Debra S. Nelson, the new judge assigned to George Zimmerman's case on Thursday, is a 13-year judicial veteran who has a reputation for working hard, being ambitious and imposing long prison terms.

Not long ago, she sentenced a robbery suspect to 27 years in prison after he'd rejected a 20-year deal from a prosecutor.

"You don't mess around with her," said Lake Mary attorney Isadore Hyde Jr.

She wants to keep Seminole safe from violent crime, he said.

Nelson, 58, was appointed to the bench in 1999 by then-Gov. Jeb Bush. In private practice, her specialty was civil litigation, but on the bench, she's spent most of her time – seven years – handling felony trials.

She was the judge in the baby-napping case of Jennifer Latham, the woman who walked into the maternity ward of Sanford's hospital, changed clothes so that she appeared to be a nurse, then lifted a newborn from his mother's arms and walked out. This guy probably wasn't happy with Shavedlongcock either... State Department: 'Hold down the fort,' other common phrases could be racially offensive

Maybe this guy will head up the Chicago BGA after Obama is evicted from the White House in Jan 2013.
Watch your mouth -- everyday phrases like "hold down the fort" and "rule of thumb" are potentially offensive bombshells.

At least according to the State Department.

Chief Diversity Officer John Robinson penned a column in the department's latest edition of "State Magazine" advising readers on some rather obscure Ps and Qs.

Robinson ticked off several common phrases and went on to explain why their roots are racially or culturally insensitive. The result was a list of no-nos that could easily result in some tongue-tied U.S. diplomats, particularly in an administration that swaps "war on terror" for "overseas contingency operation" and once shied away from using the word "terrorism."

For instance, Robinson warned, "hold down the fort" is a potentially insulting reference to American Indian stereotypes.

"How many times have you or a colleague asked if someone could 'hold down the fort?'" he wrote. "You were likely asking someone to watch the office while you go and do something else, but the phrase's historical connotation to some is negative and racially offensive."

He explained: "To 'hold down the fort' originally meant to watch and protect against the vicious Native American intruders. In the territories of the West, Army soldiers or settlers saw the 'fort' as their refuge from their perceived 'enemy,' the stereotypical 'savage' Native American tribes."

He singled out another phrase, "Going Dutch," as a "negative stereotype portraying the Dutch as cheap."

And "rule of thumb," he wrote, can according to women's activists refer "to an antiquated law, whereby the width of a husband's thumb was the legal size of a switch or rod allowed to beat his wife."

Further, he explained, "If her bruises were not larger than the width of his thumb, the husband could not be brought to court to answer for his behavior because he had not violated the 'rule of thumb.'"

He went on to urge caution over the word "handicap," as some disability advocates "believe this term is rooted in a correlation between a disabled individual and a beggar, who had to beg with a cap in his or her hand because of the inability to maintain employment."

What to make of all this?

Robinson cited the cautionary tale of Nike rolling out a "Black and Tan" sneaker without realizing the phrase once referred to a group "that committed atrocities against Irish civilians." Nike later apologized.

"Choose your words thoughtfully," Robinson wrote. A Palatine man could spend 30 years in prison after he was arrested for the seventh time on DUI charges this week, Cook County prosecutors said today.

Bond for Osvaldo Collazo, 47, of the 1100 block of east Greenbriar Lane, was set at $300,000 in Rolling Meadows branch court on charges of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, Assistant State’s Atty. Leslie Gool said.

Police stopped Collazo Wednesday evening in the 700 block of West Dundee Road after his car was seen weaving in traffic, Gool said. Collazo told officers he had had been drinking beer and a breath test showed his blood alcohol level at .213, nearly three times the legal limit, she said.

South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade planned for March 10 - 115th Bourbon Street to also be included

They may not be on a quest for a mystical pot of gold, but organizers of the South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade are looking for some cash to help pay for next year’s festivities.

And, they’re getting a head start for the March 10 event compared to last year’s three-month blitz to resurrect the South Side tradition from a two-year hiatus.

“There were a lot of up-front activities that needed to happen last year,” said Joe Connolly, the parade committee’s co-chair . “The city didn’t want it back. The alderman didn’t want it back. But, based on all the positive feedback we received, we made our intentions known that we plan to have the parade again this coming March.”

Parade organizers say they’re confident they’ll find plenty of supporters with deep pockets to help underwrite the event. They have scheduled a Halfway to the South Side Irish Parade Party from 2 to 7 p.m. Sept. 15 at 115 Bourbon Street, 3359 W. 115th St., Merrionette Park. Tickets are $30 per person and include a buffet, unlimited beer, wine or soda, and live music — sort of a party for a much bigger party.

My ass hurt so much I had to fly the plane standing up!
The California pilot who claims he had a high-flying gay affair with actor John Travolta is airing new details about their alleged six-year relationship.

In a National Enquirer story labeled “ridiculous” by Travolta’s camp, pilot Doug Gotterba said he first met the “Grease” star in February 1981 when he interviewed for a pilot job – and by September they were lovers.

“I know the date (the affair began) because I still have the log book and records,” Gotterba, 62, told the Enquirer.

He said they flew to Monterey, Calif., together and shared a “fantastic” bottle of merlot wine over dinner at the Highlands resort in Carmel.

“I got the sense I was being courted,” Gotterba said. “As we walked from the restaurant back to the room, John suddenly said, “Hey, would you like a massage?’”

Gotterba said he'd expected the invitation, and the massage quickly led to sex.

“John was gentle but very passionate. The next day he told me with a big smile on his face, ‘I really enjoyed last night,’” Gotterba told the Enquirer.

“We have to have a burden of proof in order to suspend benefits,” Shields told other board members. “If you want to do it, let’s do it right.”

Chicago’s police pension board suspended the disability benefits Thursday of a police officer who, after going on disability because of an injury he said made it impossible for him to safely fire a handgun, has shot and killed several animals while on safari.

The eight-member board stopped short, though, of permanently revoking the disability benefits of Charles T. Siedlecki, citing a snafu in notifying him of Thursday’s “duty-disability status review.”

There was a time in this world that a driver would be very polite to a police officer making a traffic stop...But not today. Everyday police officers are called every name in the book, physically attacked and even spat at by motorists who believe they are above the law to be pulled over. The old saying, "You get more with honey than with vinegar" no longer applies. As far as I am concerned if you exit your vehicle and began to verbally attack a police officer who pulled you over, YOU DESERVE TO HAVE YOUR ASS KICKED!

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles Police Department commanding officer has been removed amid an internal investigation into a videotaped beating in which officers tackled a handcuffed registered nurse to the ground, police Chief Charlie Beck said Wednesday.

Beck said previously that he had "serious concerns" about the use of force against Michelle Jordan, 34, who was arrested in the Tujunga area on Aug. 21 after being stopped for talking on a cellphone while driving, police said.

Jordan got out of the car and cursed the two officers who stopped her, witnesses and Jordan's husband told KNBC-TV.

Fast-food restaurant surveillance video obtained by the TV station (bit.ly/NVptHP ) showed officers taking her to the ground. After she is handcuffed and walked to a police car, the 5-foot-4 woman is tackled a second time by an officer who lands on top of her.

"She made some unwise moves," her attorney, Sy Nazif, told the station. "But certainly nothing that warranted a physical assault from the LAPD."

Photos show scrapes on Jordan's face, shoulders and chest.

The officers involved in the incident have been removed from patrol duty until an LAPD investigation is complete. One is a 22-year veteran and the other is a probationary officer with 10 months on the force.

Beck said at a news conference Wednesday that Capt. Joseph Hitner of the department's Foothill Division was "severely deficient in his response," Beck said.

"Proper steps were not taken, including appropriate notifications and the removal of the involved officers from the field," Beck said. "Because of these issues, I have removed him from his command and initiated downgrade procedures. Every Los Angeles police officer, regardless of rank, will be held accountable for their actions."

Chicago police wounded a man late Wednesday night in the West Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side.

Officers from the Grand Crossing Police District were conducting an investigation around 9:45 p.m. in the area of the 6600 block of South Langley Avenue where a person had been shot earlier in the evening, according to a brief statement from police.

When the officers tried interviewing a man walking down the street, police said he pulled a handgun and pointed it at the officers. One of the officers fired and hit the man in the lower back, according to police.

The 35-year-old officer was shot near his knee and the teen in his leg and side in the 1300 block of 112th Place, officials said.

About 8 p.m., plain clothes officers stopped three teenage boys for “suspicious activity,” police said. But the 15-year-old boy fired at the officers and “engaged in a gun battle,” said Police Supt. Garry McCarthy.
But at least two residents said the officer shot his gun first. The teen was in serious condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Four of the children were in critical condition when firefighters arrived but they were stabilized and were in serious condition at a hospital, city fire Capt. Jaime Moore said. Everyone was expected to survive, he said.
The powder blue Cadillac backed slowly into the group of parents and children buying snacks from a sidewalk vendor, and the crowd banged on his windows and screamed for him to stop, but not before some of the children were trapped under the car, witnesses said.
Children's backpacks, shoes, candy and loose change were strewn about the scene behind a discount grocery store across from Main Street Elementary.
